Our pedagogic philosophy, for all children accommodated or participating in the Ark of the World’s programmes, is not confined to a superficial relationship. We approach their souls and behaviour with much love and discretion and take action on the basis of the needs and peculiarities of every child. Our main concern is for children not to feel inferior because of the hardship they went through, but realize that, through such hardship, they can gain experience that will strengthen and support them when they come of age.
In this context and encouraged by Father Antonios, we established the Ark of the World’s Experiential School at the end of the previous school year, which continued this school year.
In this school, special scientists, psychologists, social workers, teachers, mental health advisors etc. try to present to children and analyze various matters that concern them or which they may face in the future, according to contemporary pedagogic and psychological methods, along with the precepts of our orthodox tradition, which emphasize on the person and the relationships developed in the context of a group. The aim of these courses are for children to:
- take active part in the group.
- acquire critical thought and self-esteem.
- learn to explore and discover.
- reinforce their ability to understand and interpret.
- learn to express their feelings.
- learn to function individually and in a group.
- acquire knowledge through experience.
- develop their personality smoothly.
- strengthen themselves with virtues.
- learn to strive with hope.
Utilizing the role of the group, children are enabled to process emotional situations through role-play, dramatization, discussion, painting, everyday examples etc. The group, consisting of a small number of people, forms a climate of trust and safety and enables participants to bring their difficulties, fears and concerns in the group and process them. In the experiential school, children and adolescents gain better self-knowledge, learn to identify and better understand themselves and their mode of operation the group, learn to work with others, share feelings and views and develop positive interpersonal relations.
Our wish and goal is for children to receive the necessary equipment to become ready and active citizens in the future and contribute to the improvement of our society.
We motivate the children to be able to develop their virtues and skills. We reward the efforts of every child and encourage them to continue with the same zeal. In the case of children with difficult behaviour, we do not encourage consistency only; we stand by them with love, patience and forgiveness, thereby helping children to understand their mistakes and giving them the chance to change. Finally, an important element of our pedagogic approach is for children to learn to apologize and forgive as pillars of personal, family and social balance.
Our aim being for children to adopt positive attitude and behaviour, we have chosen experiential learning as a method to design and implement our programmes; it a vital process for people to create experiences, develop their personality and, in the end, improve their lives, also on the basis of contemporary pedagogic methods that emphasize on the person and their relations in the context of a group.
Through experiential learning, children:
- are encouraged to take active part.
- explore & discover.
- reinforce their ability to understand and interpret
- learn to function individually and in a group
- acquire knowledge through experience
- develop their personality smoothly
The selection of our programmes’ topics is based on the preferences of the teachers, who are very well aware of the needs of the children, and the recommendations of the scientific community.
Finally, we have developed collaborations with bodies and nonprofit organisations to always be able to offer programmes and services relating to current social matters and concerning the educational community.
The Experiential School consists of rich human resources, scientists specialized in the field of education and experienced encouragers, who are continuously trained in their fields.
Programmes are designed by scientists specialized in the relevant education fields and implemented by specialized encouragers-teachers. The specialties with which we collaborate for the implementation of our activities comprise teachers, theatre specialists, psychologists, artists and environmentalists.
Our people are selected on the basis of strict criteria and assessed on an annual basis, with an aim to ensure that the needs of collaborating schools are met.
